१९४० मध्ये काही मुंबई निवासी श्रीरामकृष्ण भक्तांना खार येथील रामकृष्ण मठात जाणे काही कारणाने अवघड होत गेले तेव्हा दादर रेल्वे स्थानकाजवळील एक खोली भाड्याने  घेवून त्या भक्त मंडळीनी एकत्र येण्याचे ठरवले. श्रीरामकृष्ण आणि स्वामी विवेकानंद यांचे जीवन दर्शित करणारे आणि उपदेश सांगणाऱ्या साहित्याचे नियमितपणे वाचन करण्याचा परिपाठ या ठिकाणी चालत असे व त्यास विवेकानंद सोसायटी असे नांव दिले गेले. कालांतराने सोसायटीचे  रामकृष्ण विवेकानंद सेंटर असे नामकरण होवून १९५५ मध्ये धर्मदाय संस्थेकडे नोंदणी केली गेली गेली.

प्रारंभी काही भक्त मंडळींनी दिलेले ग्रंथ व वाचन साहित्य, पूजासाहित्य व इतर सामानसुमान यांच्या मदतीने सेंटरचे नित्य कार्य सुरु झाले. पुढे दादर भागातच एका लाकडी इमारतीच्या पहिल्या मजल्यावर रामकृष्ण सेंटरचे स्थलांतर होऊन तेथे कार्य चालू राहिले. हळू हळू व कालांतराने  अनेक भाविक सेंटरमध्ये नियमितपणे येवू लागले व थोड्या फार प्रमाणातील  देणगीच्या स्वरुपात आधारही मिळत राहिला. सुरुवातीला प्रत्येक शनिवारी संध्याकाळी ज्येष्ठ संन्यासी संबुद्धानंदजी महाराज यांची प्रवचने नियमितपणे होऊ लागली.त्यांच्यासह बेलूर येथील रामकृष्ण मठाचे अध्यक्ष सेन्टरमध्ये आले होते. रामकृष्ण मठ, खार व रामकृष्ण मठाच्या विविध केंद्रातील ज्येष्ठ संन्यासी यांच्या आशिर्वचनाचा लाभ सेंटरमध्ये  भक्त मंडळी आजही घेत आहेत.

मुंबईच्या मध्यवर्ती ठिकाणी असलेल्या रामकृष्ण विवेकानंद सेंटरमध्ये अधिकाधिक भाविक यावेत अशी  जुन्या भक्त मंडळींना मनापासून इच्छा होती. त्याच्या अथक प्रयत्नाने ती इच्छा पूर्ण होवून सेंटर सध्याच्या इमारतीतील मोठ्या जागेत कार्यरत आहे. स्व. राजाध्यक्ष आणि अन्य भाविकांच्या प्रयत्नातून हे शक्य झाले आहे.

प्रातःकालीन व सायंकालीन आरती आणि संकीर्तने येथे नित्यपणे होत असून अध्यात्मिक प्रवचने, शिबिरे, जपयज्ञ, शालेय विद्यार्थ्यांच्या शिक्षणात हातभार इ. कार्यक्रम येथे  होत असतात. धार्मिक व अध्यात्मिक ग्रथ व मासिके यांनी सुसज्ज वाचनालयही या ठिकाणी आहे. रामकृष्ण विवेकानंद सेंटर चे कामकाज कार्यकारी समितीच्या मार्गदर्शनाने चालते.   

It was the year of 1940. Some devotees of Shri Ramakrishna, who experienced difficulty in reaching Ramakrishna math, Khar, started meeting and offer prayers in a small rented room near dadar rly. station. Besides daily meeting of devotees, reading passage from literature depicting lives & teachings of Shri Ramakrishna, & Swami Vivekananda continued and the devotees formed a group called Vivekananda Society, which subsequently changed to Ramakrishna Vivekananda Centre & registered with Charitable Trust in 1955.
Few old books, literature and other utility items received from the devotees were the initial contributions received by the Centre. In the course of time Centre was shifted to a modest hall on first floor of an old building at present premises. With meager resources, activities of the Centre went on initially, until some more devotees started visiting regularly and contributing small offering in the course of time.
It was Swami Sambuddhanandadaji Maharaj, who initially delivered lectures on every Saturday evening at the Centre. He also brought along with him President Maharaj of Ramakrishna Math, Belur and some other senior swamijis of various centres. Thus, Centre is so far graced by many senior Swamijis. Inspired by their teachings few devotees have also joined the Order.  During the course of time and initiative of active devotees Centre at present has specious place in a building at same premise. Untiring efforts of Late Shri. B.Y. Rajyadhyaksha & many other dedicated devotees were responsible for this development. In the year 1990 Centre celebrated Golden Anniversary amidst yearlong programmes of spiritual discourses.
Spiritual retreats, discourses, Japayagnya, programmes supporting educational activities are the activities of the Centre, besides daily morning-evening prayers. Centre also has a library equipped with rare & old collection of books on Culture & religion.  Centre functions under Elected managing committee.
